Anuclear neutrophils keep hunting

Neutrophils release extracellular DNA traps (NETs) to capture and kill pathogens. A recent study shows that live neutrophils are simultaneously able to form NETs while crawling and phagocytosing and can even combat bacteria after loss of their nuclear DNA (pages 1386–1393).

Expression of therapeutic proteins after delivery of chemically modified mRNA in mice

Messenger RNA has received little attention as a potential therapeutic agent. Kormann et al. show that intramuscular injection of chemically modified erythropoietin mRNA substantially increases the hematocrit in mice and demonstrate the curative potential of pulmonary mRNA delivery in a mouse model of congenital surfactant protein B deficiency.

Neutrophil extracellular trap-associated RNA and LL37 enable self-amplifying inflammation in psoriasis

Antimicrobial peptide LL37 can bind nucleic acids and potentiate their sensing by endosomal TLRs. Here the authors show that LL37 binds to RNA from neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which amplifies inflammation and production of more LL37 and NETs via TLR8/13, suggesting that LL37 contribution to psoriasis may be fueled by NET-associated RNA.

CXCR2 mediates NADPH oxidase–independent neutrophil extracellular trap formation in cystic fibrosis airway inflammation

Recent studies have shown that neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) can capture and kill bacteria but may also contribute to chronic inflammation. The mechanisms that trigger NET formation are not yet fully elucidated. Marcos et al. now report that stimulation of the chemokine receptor CXCR, induces NET formation and that NETs are present in airway fluids of individuals with cystic fibrosis. Blocking CXCR2 activation in the lung reduced NET formation and improved lung function in a mouse model of cystic fibrosis.

Observation of the rare B_s⁰ →µ⁺µ⁻ decay from the combined analysis of CMS and LHCb data

Combined analysis of proton-proton collision data from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN by the CMS and LHCb collaborations leads to the observation of the extremely rare decay of the strange B meson into muons; the result is compatible with the standard model of particle physics, and does not show any signs of new physics, such as supersymmetry.
