Controlling supercurrent pathways in a Josephson junction can lead to new functionalities. Here, Lahabi et al. demonstrate the tailoring of two distinct supercurrent channels in a ferromagnetic disk containing a magnetic vortex.

Strontium isoscape of sub-Saharan Africa allows tracing origins of victims of the transatlantic slave trade

Strontium isotope analysis can be applied to animal and plant tissues to help determine their provenance. Here, the authors generate a strontium isoscape of sub-Saharan Africa using data from 2266 environmental samples and demonstrate its efficacy by tracing the African roots of individuals from historic slavery contexts.

Milestone in predicting core plasma turbulence: successful multi-channel validation of the gyrokinetic code GENE

Plasma turbulence is the main driver to deteriorate the performance of fusion power plants. This work presents an unprecedented comparison of plasma turbulence between experiment and simulation, proving that the gyrokinetic model GENE reached a high level of maturity to predict core turbulence.

Effect of energetic ions on edge-localized modes in tokamak plasmas

Edge-localized plasma modes in a tokamak can damage its innermost wall. Simulations now show that fast ions can modify the spatio-temporal structure of these modes. These effects need to be considered in the optimization of control techniques.

Recent genetic connectivity and clinal variation in chimpanzees

Lester and colleagues use faecal samples and genetic analyses to investigate the genetic connectivity across chimpanzees. Their results indicate that the global pattern of genetic diversity in chimpanzees is largely characterized by a pattern of isolation by distance with several isolated populations exhibiting strong local differentiation.
