  • It is commonly assumed that pro-environmental behaviour can be triggered by offering an extrinsic reward. Now research shows that acting pro-environmentally elicits positive feelings and leads people to feel warmer. In experiments, people who learn they act in an environmentally friendly way feel good about themselves and perceive a higher room temperature than people who learn their behaviour is environmentally unfriendly.

  • The Hague in the Netherlands was the first city in the world to enact a law prohibiting advertisements for fossil fuel products and services. Although the ban is restricted to The Hague’s jurisdiction, the decision to implement the ban challenges norms and conventions that drive fossil-fuel consumption worldwide and sets an example for other governments to follow.

  • Social convention change due to diffusion is often described by agent-based models focusing on the role of social coordination.
