Coronavirus M protein promotes mitophagy over virophagy by recruiting PDPK1 to phosphorylate SQSTM1 at T138

Autophagy plays a dual role in coronavirus infection. Here, the authors identify PDPK1 as a key regulator that switches between virophagy and mitophagy and demonstrate that a PDPK1-targeting peptide restored immunity and protected mice from lethal viral infections.

Intermediate-spin ferrous iron in lowermost mantle post-perovskite and perovskite

The Earth’s lowermost mantle displays an important mineralogical transition from perovskite to post-perovskite but the spin state of iron in these phases remains poorly known. Experimental results suggest that iron occurs in the intermediate spin state in both of these phases, which implies that changes in physical properties of the lower mantle must be governed by factors other than spin transitions in iron.

Iron isotopic fractionation between silicate mantle and metallic core at high pressure

Terrestrial basalts have a unique iron isotopic signature taken as fingerprints of core formation. Here, high pressure studies show that force constants of iron bonds increase with pressure similarly for silicate and metals suggesting interplanetary isotopic variability is not due to core formation.

N⁶-methyladenosine modification enables viral RNA to escape recognition by RNA sensor RIG-I
