Akram Da’dara et al. report the biochemical characterization of an α-carbonic anhydrase (SmCA) expressed at the surface of the parasitic worm Schistosoma mansoni. Along with the crystal structure of SmCA, they show the function of selective inhibitors in blocking essential schistosome metabolism.
