Zinc finger domains bind low-complexity domain polymers

Self-association of low-complexity protein sequences (LC domains) is important for polymer formation, but the mechanisms underlying cell recognition of LC domain polymers remain unclear. Here, authors show that zinc finger domains bind LC domains in a cross-β polymer-dependent manner.

Concordant inter-laboratory derived concentrations of ceramides in human plasma reference materials via authentic standards

Here, the authors compared measurements between 34 laboratories from 19 countries, to quantify by mass spectrometry four ceramides of clinical relevance in human blood plasma Standard Reference Materials. The main goals were to evaluate concordance obtained in a large inter-laboratory trial and to report absolute concentrations of four circulating lipids in a publicly available standard.

Membrane structure-responsive lipid scrambling by TMEM63B to control plasma membrane lipid distribution

By combining genome-wide clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats with Cas9 screening and cryo-electron microscopy structure analysis, the authors identified transmembrane protein 63B as a lipid scramblase that detects structural changes in the lipid bilayer and scrambles lipids to regulate membrane lipid distributions.

Disease-relevant β₂-microglobulin variants share a common amyloid fold

The authors use cryo-EM to determine amyloid fibrils structures of disease relevant variants of β2-microglobulin in vitro. Each variant is polymorphic, but all polymorphs from all samples are built from a a lego-like assembly of common building blocks, suggesting a one amyloid fold’ paradigm.

Noji et al. test link between protein folding and misfolding upon heating and agitation. They show that folding and amyloid formation are separated by the supersaturation barrier of a protein, breakdown of which shifts the protein to the amyloid pathway. This study is useful to the field of protein folding versus self-assembly and amyloidogenesis.
