Molecular architecture and the structural basis for anion interaction in prestin and SLC26 transporters

Prestin is an anion transporter-like protein in the mammalian inner ear that amplifies sound-induced vibration by voltage-driven structural rearrangements. Here, Gorbunov et al. show that this electromechanical activity is controlled by the binding of anions to a central cavity within the protein core.

SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro) directly activates coagulation by cleaving factors VII and XII, showing a broader protease specificity and revealing a novel mechanism linking COVID-19 infection to thrombosis.
