Halogen-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are good candidates for the reversible sequestration of radioactive iodine vapour in the context of nuclear waste management, but its application remains unexplored. Here, the authors propose choline iodide- and chloride-glycerol DESs as gaseous iodine sponges, demonstrating an uptake capacity of up to 4 g g−1 facilitated by the hydrogen bond donor behaviour of glycerol in the uptake mechanism.
