The isopentenol utilization (IU) pathway has been reported as an alternative synthetic route for terpenoid synthesis, but isopentenol inhibits energy metabolism in baker’s yeast. Here, the authors solve the problem by replacing the mevalonate pathway with the IU pathway for growth-coupled squalene, β-carotene, and limonene production.
