A regiochemically distinctive single nitrogen atom insertion of indoles is enabled by a tandem 1,3 nitroso translocation followed by a concerted nitrogen migration mechanism. This non-nitrene mediated aromatic C–C bond activation process generates a rare 1,4-dinitrogen connectivity within the scaffold, enabling access to previously underexplored quinoxaline pharmacophores through late-stage diversification of bio-relevant indoles.
