DNA damage repair machinery is not robust in full-grown mammalian oocytes. Here, the authors demonstrate that mammalian oocytes fail to activate autophagy in response to DNA DSBs, correlating with an altered chromatin structure, improper localization of DNA damage repair proteins and increased DNA damage.
