Channelized melt beneath Antarctic ice shelves previously underestimated

Channelized subsurface melting is an important process in the dynamics of ice shelves. Here the authors present observational data from Antarctic ice shelves and show that their basal melt is up to 50% higher than previously assumed.

Interannual wave-driven shoreline change on the California coast

Landsat satellite images reveal coherent interannual beach narrowing and widening across California in response to changes in central North Pacific wave power, with no 1985-2021 statewide mean shoreline loss. Low wave power (beach widening) correlates poorly with the El Niño climate index.

Pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and mutational burden as biomarkers of tumor response to immune checkpoint inhibitors

There is an unmet clinical need for simple, accessible biomarkers to select patients who are more likely to respond to immune checkpoint therapy. Here the authors show that a lower neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is associated with better overall and progressive-free survival, as well as higher rate of response, in a multi-cancer cohort of patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors.
