Nadler et al examined how social familiarity influences fast-start defensive responses in the tropical damselfish Chromis viridis. They showed that fish in familiar schools responded faster to threats and the behaviour of others in the school than those in unfamiliar schools, which indicates that social recognition and memory can modify fish anti-predator behaviour.
