Impact of oceanic-scale interactions on the seasonal modulation of ocean dynamics by the atmosphere

Oceanic mesoscale eddies are thought to derive from internal ocean instability. Here, the authors present a high-resolution simulation of the North Pacific Ocean and show that mesoscale eddies are instead sustained by small-scale mixed-layer instabilities triggered by atmospheric forcing in winter.

Satellite altimeters resolution poorly capture mesoscale signals in the upper ocean. Here, the authors analyse shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler measurements from the northwest Pacific, and show that balanced geostrophic flows and unbalanced internal waves comprise upper ocean velocities.

Vorticity and divergence at scales down to 200 km within and around the polar cyclones of Jupiter

The extraction of the wind pattern, vorticity and divergence down to a scale of 200 km from the cluster of cyclones at Jupiter’s north pole shows evidence of an anticyclonic ring, which is needed to keep the system stable, around the central cyclone. No signatures of convection are observed at 200 km scales.
