Periodic potentials have traditionally been used to control phase transitions in equilibrium colloidal suspensions, but their application to active colloids remains less explored. Here, the authors demonstrate that spatially periodic potentials can induce so-far unknown active matter phase, the active adaptolates, that adapts structural order like a frozen phase while retaining the ballistic dynamics of the molten phase.
