Can ferric-oxyl excited states explain elongated iron-oxygen bonds in heme peroxidase catalytic intermediates?

Peroxidases have long been considered to use ferryl heme intermediates (Fe(IV) = O) to catalyze oxidative chemistries. Here, Williams et al. find that ferric-oxyl (Fe^III–O^•–) excited states exist along the catalytic reaction coordinate of a peroxidase.

Dynamical topological phase realized in a trapped-ion quantum simulator

A dynamical topological phase with edge qubits that are dynamically protected from control errors, cross-talk and stray fields, is demonstrated in a quasiperiodically driven array of ten ¹⁷¹Yb⁺ hyperfine qubits in a model trapped-ion quantum processor.
