Leveraging machine learning for digital gait analysis in ataxia using sensor-free motion capture

Wegner et al. apply machine learning to video recordings of walking tasks in people with ataxia and healthy controls using sensor-free motion capture. Their models replicate clinical ratings and detect subtle longitudinal gait changes that are challenging to capture in standard assessments, supporting improved monitoring of disease progression.

Multispecies deep learning using citizen science data produces more informative plant community models

By modelling the distribution of the entire Swiss flora using deep learning and citizen science data, this study demonstrates a method that predicts flowering phenology and potentially dominant tree species more accurately than commonly used approaches. This approach could enable investigation of understudied aspects of ecology and refine our understanding of plant distributions.

Coherent terabit communications with microresonator Kerr frequency combs

Kerr frequency combs are well suited for high-capacity data transmission with phase-sensitive modulation formats. This work demonstrates error-free transmission with data rates of up to 1.44 Tbit s⁻¹, spectral efficiencies of up to 6 bit s⁻¹ Hz⁻¹ and transmission distances of up to 300 km.

MAPK-pathway inhibition mediates inflammatory reprogramming and sensitizes tumors to targeted activation of innate immunity sensor RIG-I

Kinase inhibitors are widely used to treat cancer, however patients frequently develop resistance. Here, the authors investigate adaption mechanisms during drug persistence and show that stimulation of the innate immunity sensor RIG-I enhances cancer cell death when combined with kinase inhibition.

Confirmation of the topology of the Wendelstein 7-X magnetic field to better than 1:100,000

Early stellarator designs suffered from high particle losses, an issue that can be addressed by optimization of the coils. Here the authors measure the magnetic field lines in the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, confirming that the complicated design of the superconducting coils has been realized successfully.
