In this study, the authors show that microbial rhodopsins, proteins that drive the ocean’s most widespread light-driven microbial metabolism, display overlapping distributions with algal blooms in nutrient-rich waters, expanding rhodopsins’ known role of supporting bacterioplankton beyond oligotrophic regions.
