Observation of a dynamic transition in bulk supercooled water

Water has remarkable dynamic properties; a transition from a fragile to a strong liquid has been proposed to explain how they change on cooling. Experiments now show evidence for such a transition in bulk supercooled water at around 233 K.

Coherent control of rare earth 4f shell wavefunctions in the quantum spin liquid Tb₂Ti₂O₇

Recent years have seen significant progress in the coherent control of collective excitations such as magnons and phonons in quantum materials using ultrafast laser pulses. Here the authors report evidence of coherent excitation of orbitals in a rare earth pyrochlore spin liquid material Tb2Ti2O7 by THz pulses.

Ultrafast and persistent photoinduced phase transition at room temperature monitored by streaming powder diffraction

Photoinduced phase transitions occur in a variety of materials and allow for the optical control of the materials properties. Here, Herve et al present a streaming powder X-ray diffraction method allowing them to study the ultrafast photoinduced phase transition of Rb_0.94Mn_0.94Co_0.06[Fe(CN)₆]_0.9 within thermal hysteresis.

Strain wave pathway to semiconductor-to-metal transition revealed by time-resolved X-ray powder diffraction

Ultrafast control of materials draws interest. Here, the authors extend X-ray powder diffraction to the femtosecond timescale to follow the photo-induced semiconductor to metal transition in titanium pentaoxide, observing a phase front that moves at the speed of sound and proposing a little explored mechanism.
