Compositionally-graded amorphous rare-earth:transition-metal ferrimagnetic thin films hold promise for enabling field-free spin-orbit torque switching in spintronic devices. Here, the authors use X-ray and neutron reflectivity to map magnetization orientations in GdCoFe layers, revealing crucial insights into magnetization anisotropy and the gradient-driven spin structures that enable field-free spin-orbit torque switching.
