Identifying grain boundary and intragranular pinning centres in Sm₂(Co,Fe,Cu,Zr)₁₇ permanent magnets to guide performance optimisation

Rare-earth permanent magnets are engineered with a complex microstructure of composition and phase, grains and grain boundaries, and it is this complex structure which leads to the magnetic performance. Here, Giron and coauthors, through thorough microstructural analysis, demonstrate that the grain microstructure, not grain boundaries, are primarily responsible for optimal magnetic properties.

Mutations in FAM50A suggest that Armfield XLID syndrome is a spliceosomopathy

Armfield X-linked disability (XLID) disorder has previously been linked to a locus in Xq28. Here, the authors report rare missense variants in FAM50A at Xq28, show that FAM50A interacts with the spliceosome, and that mis-splicing is enriched in knockout zebrafish suggesting it is a spliceosomopathy.
