Electronic Raman scattering as an ultra-sensitive probe of strain effects in semiconductors

Engineering strain in semiconductor structures provides additional control over the optical and electronic properties, which is promising for device applications. Fluegel et al. show that electronic Raman scattering provides a route to sensitively measure the degree of strain in thin semiconductor layers.

Bright emission from a random Raman laser

Unlike conventional lasers that require a uniform resonant cavity to operate, random lasers use a highly disordered gain medium in which scattering is dominant. Hokr et al. report Raman lasing from a bulk three-dimensional disordered medium whose intensity exceeds that of other random lasers by many orders of magnitude.

A brain tumor molecular imaging strategy using a new triple-modality MRI-photoacoustic-Raman nanoparticle

The ability to effectively assess tumor margins for brain tumor resection is a crucial factor in determining outcome in patients with brain tumors. Moritz Kircher and colleagues have developed a gold-silica nanoparticle that provides a triple-mode imaging capability of magnetic resonance, photoacoustic and Raman imaging, capitalizing on the complementary strengths of each modality for noninvasively delineating brain tumor margins both preoperatively and intraoperatively. The approach was tested in several mouse models, including one that recapitulates the infiltrating growth pattern of human gliomas.

Multicolour nonlinearly bound chirped dissipative solitons

Stimulated Raman scattering limits the energy of dissipative solitons by converting excess energy into noisy Raman pulses. Using delay compensation, Babin et al. demonstrate that these noisy pulses can become coherent Raman dissipative solitons leading to the formation of multicolour bound dissipative soliton complexes.
