Oxidative potential of atmospheric particles in Europe and exposure scenarios

Extensive oxidative potential measurements from across Europe analysed with the two most common assays, dithiothreitol and ascorbic acid, using a standardized protocol show the strong influence of site type and suggest pathways for mitigation strategies.

A caveolin-dependent and PI3K/AKT-independent role of PTEN in β-catenin transcriptional activity

The mechanism by which PTEN mutation is melanomagenic is complicated by different PTEN functions in different cellular locations. Here, the authors identify an alternative to membrane PI3K–AKT signalling, a caveolin-1-dependent PTEN pathway that induces nuclear localization and activation of β-catenin.

Early antiretroviral therapy favors post-treatment SIV control associated with the expansion of enhanced memory CD8⁺ T-cells

HIV remission has been seen in people living with HIV after the cessation of antiretroviral therapy and is termed post treatment control. Here Passaes and colleagues present an SIV model that shows early initiation of antiretroviral therapy after SIV infection is linked to improved post treatment control upon cessation of antiviral therapy and associates with the expansion of an enhanced memory pool of CD8 + T cells‘.

Mucosal application of the broadly neutralizing antibody 10-1074 protects macaques from cell-associated SHIV vaginal exposure

HIV-1 can be transmitted by infected cells in body fluids and an efficient prophylaxis should prevent this. Here the authors show that the HIV-1 antibody 10-1074, when applied as topical vaginal gel, inhibits cell-associated transmission in non-human primates.

Truncating mutations in the last exon of NOTCH2 cause a rare skeletal disorder with osteoporosis

Cédric Le Caignec and colleagues show that truncating mutations in the last exon of NOTCH2 cause Hajdu-Cheney syndrome, a rare disorder marked by facial anomalies, osteoporosis and multiple organ defects. The mutations are predicted to result in an increase in NOTCH2 signaling.
