Conversion-type batteries face performance decay under high loading due to shuttle effects and sluggish kinetics. Here, authors introduce an f-d orbital tag-team catalysis mechanism using cerium single-atom catalysts, achieving a competitive iodine loading of 44.7 mg cm−2 and an areal capacity of 10.2 mAh cm−2 in zinc–iodine batteries.
