Anti-TLR2 immunotherapy modulates neuron-to-oligodendrocyte propagation of α-synuclein in mouse and human models

The pathological mechanisms underlying multiple system atrophy (MSA) remain unclear. Here, the authors show in mouse and human MSA models that α-synuclein spreads from neurons to oligodendrocytes via TLR2 leading to myelination defects, and that blocking TLR2 prevents glial cytoplasmic inclusions and myelin damage.

High-performance crosslinked colloidal quantum-dot light-emitting diodes

Bright, efficient and low-drive-voltage colloidal quantum-dot LEDs that have a crosslinked-polymer quantum-dot layer, and use a sol–gel titanium oxide layer for electron transport, are reported. Integrating the QD-LEDs with a silicon thin-film transistor backplane results in a QD-LED display.

Microbiome-emitted scents activate olfactory neuron-independent airway-gut-brain axis to promote host growth in Drosophila

Animals detect microbiomes through smell, aiding communication, group recognition, and behavior. Here with Drosophila model, the authors show that airway and gut cells can sense microbiome-emitted scents independently of smell, promoting host growth.

Response of the microbiome–gut–brain axis in Drosophila to amino acid deficit

In Drosophila, an amino acid deficit triggers the expression of the neuropeptide CNMamide in gut enterocytes, which promotes a compensatory appetite for essential over non-essential amino acids, and this process is modulated by the microbiome.

Airway epithelial CD47 plays a critical role in inducing influenza virus-mediated bacterial super-infection

During the influenza pandemic, a large number of deaths resulted from secondary bacterial pneumonia caused by common upper respiratory tract bacteria, such as Staphylococcus. Here, Moon et al, find that the interaction between airway epithelial CD47 and the pathogenic bacterial FnBP is critical in causing bacterial superinfection.

Sugar-mediated regulation of a c-di-GMP phosphodiesterase in Vibrio cholerae

Carbon sources can modulate biofilm formation and host colonization in Vibrio cholerae. Here, Heo et al. show that this process is mediated by a component of the PEP:carbohydrate phosphotransferase system (PTS), which regulates c-di-GMP hydrolysis by interacting with a c-di-GMP phosphodiesterase.

The Hippo pathway plays a role in regulating organ size and stem cell renewal but the regulatory mechanisms that fine-tune this pathway are not well understood. Here the authors report on the role of NEDD4 as a negative regulator of the Hippo signalling components, WW45 and LATS kinase, and in controlling cell proliferation and intestinal stem cell homeostasis.
