Acid mine drainage (AMD) contains toxic metals that harm ecosystems. Here, Lei et al. developed an electrochemically activated limestone system to treat AMD, extracting 82.3-100% of metals with high purity, reducing costs by 17.9%, and CO2 emissions by 60.1%.
