Excitonic quantum superlattices for efficient photocatalytic water splitting

Splitting water using sunlight is a promising route to green hydrogen, yet inefficient charge carrier utilization in photocatalysts limits their solar-to-hydrogen efficiency. Here the authors introduce excitonic quantum superlattices to prolong exciton lifetimes and optimize charge steering, achieving a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 3% under ambient conditions.

Sunlight-activated long-persistent luminescence in the near-infrared from Cr³⁺-doped zinc gallogermanates

Persistent phosphors are known from applications such as night-vision goggles where they produce a characteristic green afterglow. The discovery of persistent phosphors that instead operate at near-infrared wavelengths with much longer afterglows may now enable new applications in night-vision surveillance and in bio-imaging.

Synergistic strain engineering of perovskite single crystals for highly stable and sensitive X-ray detectors with low-bias imaging and monitoring

X-ray detectors based on dual-site-doped perovskite single crystals exhibit excellent sensitivity of 2.6 × 10⁴ μC Gy_air⁻¹ cm^–2 under a low field of 1 V cm^–1. The detectable dose rate is as low as 7.09 nGy_air s^–1. The operational stability is beyond half a year.
