Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is a powerful technique that can identify the presence of certain atoms in a sample by their magnetic properties. Müller et al.now take this concept to its ultimate limit by measuring individual nuclear spins near the surface of diamond.

Observation of the Kibble–Zurek scaling law for defect formation in ion crystals

The formation of defects in numerous systems is believed to follow universal scaling laws arising from the Kibble–Zurek mechanism. Ulm et al.measure this scaling law for defects created in ion Coulomb crystals, confirming the predicted behaviour for a system of 16 ions.

The role of non-equilibrium vibrational structures in electronic coherence and recoherence in pigment–protein complexes

Photosynthesis is remarkably efficient. The transport of optically generated excitons from absorbing pigments, through protein complexes, to reaction centres is nearly perfect. Simulations now uncover the microscopic mechanism that drives this coherent behaviour: interactions between the excitons and the vibrational modes of the pigment-protein complex.

Topological defect formation and spontaneous symmetry breaking in ion Coulomb crystals

The Kibble–Zurek mechanism describes the formation of topological defects in systems undergoing continuous phase transitions, and predicts a power law for their density.
