From: Epigenetically conferred ring-stage survival in Plasmodium falciparum against artemisinin treatment
Various levels of Pfmyst expression exist in the natural P. falciparum parasite population, affecting the expression of genes through epigenetic regulation. After exposure to DHA, some parasites in the targeted cluster with low Pfmyst expression display altered cell cycle timing and metabolic quiescence, promoting ring-stage survival and recrudescence after a period of dormancy.
