In developing xylem vessel cells, the transcription factor NUT1 activates the expression of Exo70A1, which encodes the Exo70 subunit of the exocyst complex. The exocyst complex tethers secretory vesicles, which carry enzymes and substrates required for secondary cell wall (SCW) deposition, to the target membrane in xylem vessel cells. Loss-of-function mutants exhibit defects in patterned SCW thickening and impaired xylem vessel development, leading to a significant reduction in overall plant water conductivity. PCW primary cell wall, SCW secondary cell wall.
