To a solution of 21 (0.25 g; 1.57 mmol) in acetonitrile (1.00 ml) was added NBS (0.25 g; 1.41 mmol). The mixture was stirred for 12 h at room temperature, evaporated to dryness and partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The combined organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated. Purification by silica gel chromatography (2% methanol in DCM) gave 4-(5-bromo-3-methyl-3H-imidazol-4-yl)-pyridine (22) (0.20 g; 0.84 mmol, 54%).
