Q&A with our Editor-in-Chief
Get to know our founding Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Jasmeet Kaler, as she shares her thoughts about her research experience and becoming involved with the journal.
What is your research background?
I am a veterinary epidemiologist by training. Focus of my research to use data /big data to understand patterns that can be used to advance our understanding of livestock health, welfare and behaviour.
For this I apply various epidemiological tools while working in multidisciplinary teams, developing and validating tools to measure health and behaviour (e.g precision technologies). I utilize range of statistical and mathematical modelling frameworks including the use of advanced multivariable and multivariate techniques, machine learning in advancement of our understanding of disease processes in animal populations, animal behaviour and personality. I am interested in decision making processes, understanding risk perception, and potential barriers in adopting a new technology/treatment , since these influence the management of diseases. I use range of qualitative and quantitative methods for this research.
What are you most looking forward to in your role as Editor-in-Chief?
I am excited to elevate the journal’s reputation by publishing high-quality, impactful science that advances veterinary research. I will foster collaboration with the editorial team to ensure rigorous peer review and efficient processes, while expanding the journal’s global reach by engaging researchers from diverse regions. A major focus will be promoting interdisciplinary veterinary research, bridging gaps between disciplines, clinical practice, public health, and emerging technologies. I am looking forward for the journal to become a leading platform for sharing new innovations and groundbreaking veterinary science.
What type of work would you like to commission?
I am particularly excited to commission work that pushes boundaries in veterinary science, One Health, and sustainable livestock systems. In particular innovations in animal health and welfare, use of AI and digital tools, emerging trends such as ethical dilemmas in veterinary e.g gene editing, interdisciplinary studies esp animal-human and environment interfaces and stakeholder behaviour and disease management.
How will you steer the development of npj Veterinary Science?
For journal’s development strategically, I will focus on quality, relevance, innovation, and global engagement. I will champion Interdisciplinary & Emerging Fields, you can see some of our collections that are already running. We are planning to commission as well. As editorial team we are very keen to expand our global reach so we will actively solicit submissions from various countries across the glove through developing network of board members across the world.
