Recently, superconductivity intertwined with an insulating phase at a commensurate band-filling was discovered in twisted bilayer WSe₂. Here, the authors theoretically propose that the observed insulating state may be a quantum spin-liquid Mott insulator with electron fractionalization, separated from the superconductor via a quantum phase transition.

A quantum spin liquid is a spin state with no magnetic order even at the lowest temperatures. To explain neutron scattering data on a ‘kagome lattice’ antiferromagnet, visons (elementary excitations of vortices) must be included, in addition to the usual fractionalized spinons.

Kondo physics has been observed in moiré bilayers, but the expected magnetic transitions have not been reported. Now, a metal–insulator transition with ferromagnetic order that develops at nearly the same time is reported in a moiré bilayer.

Here the authors report the thermodynamic properties of YbB₁₂ in a magnetic field pointing to the presence of in-gap fermionic excitations.

Quantum oscillations serve as an important probe of electronic structure of quantum materials. Yang et al. study quantum oscillations in the electronic specific heat of natural graphite, unveiling a double-peak structure absent in commonly used theory, and show its utility in determining the Landé g-factors.

Recent experiments on the dynamical charge response of strange metals reveal unusual features such as momentum-independent continuum of excitations and unconventional plasmon decay. Here the authors present a phenomenological theory based on the analogy to classical fluids near a jamming-like transition.

The nature of the so-called pseudogap phase exhibited by many cuprate superconductors is one of the most puzzling questions in the field of unconventional superconductivity. Allais et al. present a model that can reconcile some of the experimental observations at high and low fields.

The interaction strength in moiré superlattices is tuned to drive a continuous metal-to-insulator transition at a fixed electron density.

Samarium hexaboride is a candidate topological insulator but recent experiments have found behaviour indicative of a metallic Fermi liquid phase. Here the authors show that the conflicting observations can be accommodated by a model where strong interactions drive the formation of exotic neutral quasiparticles.
