High-nickel layered positive electrodes suffer from lattice oxygen loss and inherent lattice strain. Here, authors report a self-derived subtractive strategy to form a coherent spinel-phase shell with tunable thickness to confine active oxygen intermediates and suppresses interfacial side reactions.
