Regulatory T cell therapy promotes TGF-β and IL-6-dependent pro-inflammatory Th17 cell generation by reducing IL-2

Regulatory T cell therapy has shown some success therapeutically in the context of autoimmunity and transplantation. Here the authors explore the impact of IL-6, TGF-β and IL-2 on pathogenic Th17 cell generation post regulatory T cell therapy, and show therapeutic blockade of IL-6/STAT3 can reduce their generation in murine models of inflammatory disease.

Sarcosine decreases in sarcopenia and enhances muscle regeneration and adipose thermogenesis by activating anti-inflammatory macrophages

Using two cohorts, Liu, Ge, Xiao, Lu and colleagues perform plasma metabolomics and lipidomics, linking reduced sarcosine to sarcopenia diagnosis. In mice, they demonstrate that sarcosine enhances muscle repair, boosts adipose thermogenesis and preserves muscle mass via macrophage modulation.

Synthesis of core/shell nanocrystals with ordered intermetallic single-atom alloy layers for nitrate electroreduction to ammonia

Well-defined single-atom alloy (SAA) nanocrystals possess isolated atom centres and tunable electronic properties but are challenging to synthesize. Here, a direct solution-phase synthesis of Cu/CuAu core/shell nanocubes with tunable SAA layers is reported. The Cu/CuAu nanomaterial is highly active for the electrocatalytic conversion of nitrate into ammonia.

The properties of broad absorption line outflows based on a large sample of quasars

The distance of outflowing gas from the galaxy centre for 915 quasars is found to be typically tens of parsecs. Typical outflow mass rates and energies indicate that these outflows are energetic enough to influence the evolution of their host galaxies.
