Copper-catalyzed Z-selective synthesis of acrylamides and polyacrylamides via alkylidene ketenimines

Alkylidene ketenimines are rarely reported, but synthetically useful, reactive intermediates. Here, the authors disclose a three-component reaction of alkyne, azide and water by cycloaddition, nitrogen extrusion, and carbene-assisted rearrangement, via in situ formation of alkylidene ketenimine.

Microbial regulation of ferroptosis in cancer

Different gut microbial metabolites have the potential to promote and protect against colorectal cancer (CRC). A study now links trans-3-indoleacrylic acid (IDA), a metabolite derived from Peptostreptococcus anaerobius, with colorectal carcinogenesis through a distinct ferroptosis pathway AHR–ALDH1A3–FSP1–CoQ₁₀.

A dominant role of transcriptional regulation during the evolution of C₄ photosynthesis in Flaveria species

C4 photosynthesis serves as a prominent example of convergent evolution in complex traits. Here, the authors construct chromosome-scale genome assemblies for five Flaveria species and investigate the genomic evolution of C4 photosynthesis. Their findings emphasize the roles of retrotransposition and transcriptional regulation in shaping C4 traits.

A non-canonical visual cortical-entorhinal pathway contributes to spatial navigation

Neural circuitry conveying visual information to the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC), a crucial region for spatial cognition, is not fully understood. Here, the authors report a direct pathway from the secondary visual cortex to MEC layer 5a in mice and its involvement in memory-guided navigation, thus revealing a role of deep MEC in sensory information transmission.

Forecasting rice latitude adaptation through a daylength-sensing-based environment adaptation simulator

Breeding crop cultivars with better environmental adaptability could support crop yield stability to mitigate the effects of climate change. Combining transcriptional dynamics of florigen genes and statistical models, the daylength-sensing-based environment adaptation simulator can forecast the latitude adaptability of rice cultivars and has application potential in other crops.

Robustness tests for biomedical foundation models should tailor to specifications

The rise of biomedical foundation models creates new hurdles in model testing and authorization, given their broad capabilities and susceptibility to complex distribution shifts. We suggest tailoring robustness tests according to task-dependent priorities and propose to integrate granular notions of robustness in a predefined specification to guide implementation. Our approach facilitates the standardization of robustness assessments in the model lifecycle and connects abstract AI regulatory frameworks with concrete testing procedures.
