Unlocking cathodic potential dependent Pd deactivation for energy efficient CO₂ electroreduction to formate

The efficiency of palladium catalyzed CO₂ electroreduction is severely hindered by catalyst deactivation. Here, the authors report that engineering a palladium-fullerene interface enhances resistance to deactivation, enabling energy-efficient CO₂-to-formate conversion over a broad potential window.

Ballistic geometric resistance resonances in a single surface of a topological insulator

Ballistic motion on nanometer scale of topological surface states has rarely been studied. Here, Maier et al. report pronounced geometric resistance resonances of high-mobility Dirac electrons in strained HgTe, suggesting a ballistic effect in three-dimensional topological insulators.

The role of metal/oxide interfaces for long-range metal particle activation during CO oxidation

Electron microscopy and modelling are used to study CO oxidation on oxide-supported Pd. The perimeter of the metal/oxide interface is shown to affect CO tolerance of the entire particle, demonstrating a long-range effect over micrometre length scales.

This Perspective illustrates how theory and experiment can be combined to study the interfacial charge transfer between transition metal nanoparticles and oxide supports, the short- or long-range natures of interactions between them and the effects of oxide nanostructuring on the properties of supported metal particles. These studies deepen our understanding of the role of metal-oxide interactions in industrially relevant nanocomposites thus helping to design interfaces with unique properties for future applications
