The bimolecular substitution reaction, or Sn2 reaction, is a fundamental transformation that is taught in introductory organic chemistry classes, understood using the backside-attack model. Here the authors provide evidence that the traditional understanding may be incomplete, describing SN2 reactions via a contact ion-pair mechanism with 19 F-NMR.
