The German Network for Personalized Medicine to enhance patient care and translational research

Implementing personalized medicine into a national health care system is a challenging and difficult task. Generally, two different methods have been implemented: a top-down approach based on a national strategy to introduce genomic medicine into different aspects of the healthcare system; or a bottom-up approach, which is often based on regional networks1,2.

ZPMs initially focused on a integrate system of molecular tumor boards (MTBs). From the start, different stakeholders were closely involved in developing the ZPM concept. The involvement of health insurance companies enabled the funding of patient-related services by the public healthcare system, and the implementation of fast-track procedures to decide on the cost coverage of MTB-recommended treatments. At each ZPM, up to 1,000 patients per year receive advanced molecular tumor characterization and interdisciplinary counseling by the MTB, resulting in molecularly guided therapeutic recommendations for about 70% of the patients3.
