Christian Studies

Christian Studies encompasses the interdisciplinary examination of Christian faith, practice and institutions from antiquity to the present. It integrates historical investigation of doctrinal development, theological reflection on the nature of God and humanity, and sociocultural analysis of Christian communities in diverse contexts. Research ranges from the study of early patristic writings and ecumenical councils through to investigations of contemporary movements such as Pentecostalism, evangelicalism and global orthodoxy. Scholars probe the encounters between Christianity and indigenous religions, the political role of church bodies, the impact of gender and socioeconomic factors on religious practice, and the ways in which Christian education and ritual enact social cohesion. Attention to global Christianity draws on case studies in Africa, Asia and Latin America, investigating how faith is lived under varying political regimes, how migrants sustain diasporic congregations, and how digital media reshapes devotional life. Across its spectrum, Christian Studies highlights both continuities in core Christian convictions and the dynamism of local adaptations, demonstrating the religion’s ongoing significance for identity formation, social justice initiatives and interreligious dialogue.
