Nature Index author gender ratio

The gender gap in research publishing is narrowing, but ratios of female researchers remain low in many countries/territories and fields. This dataset highlights the progress made towards achieving gender parity in authorship of papers tracked by the Nature Index.

Gender was inferred by feeding unique combinations of first name, last name and origin country/territory to an algorithm. The analysis counts authorship instances rather than individual authors and so reflects publication activity rather than a strict headcount of individuals. Limitations of the data include only binary genders (male/female) being included and uneven exclusion rates for specific countries/territories. See methodology for more information.
