Recent studies have shown that oscillatory alpha-band activity (8–12 Hz) carries detailed content of imagined natural scenes. In an EEG experiment, participants formed mental images of described landscapes, and classification analyses revealed that the same alpha-pattern signatures appear during both imagery and late stages of visual perception. These findings indicate that top-down reactivation of scene-related representations is mediated by rhythmic alpha synchrony. Fine-grained individual-subject fMRI work has delineated ‘place-memory areas’ immediately anterior to classic scene-perception regions in posterior cerebral cortex. These anterior nodes constitute a distinct network that interfaces with hippocampal spatial-memory systems during naturalistic navigation. Network analyses demonstrate that these areas selectively activate when recalling familiar real-world locations, revealing how perceptual encoding zones and mnemonic zones interlock to support memory-guided visual behaviour. High-resolution diffusion tractography has identified a medial occipital longitudinal tract (MOLT) linking peripheral early visual areas to the posterior parahippocampal place area. This white-matter pathway enables direct reciprocal exchange of visuospatial information at early stages of scene encoding, bypassing traditional parietal relays. Together with bundles connecting the retrosplenial complex to anterior PPA, these systems refine current models of how the brain implements rapid visuospatial learning.Cognition publication trend
