A recent conceptual framework clarifies the distinct domains of customer insights for innovation, identifying ten activities—from crowdsourcing and co-creation to testing and tracking—and mapping how firms generate, disseminate and apply consumer data. This agenda offers practitioners a roadmap for prioritising high-impact customer insight methods and guides researchers toward unexplored domains. Empirical work on online community participation uncovers an inverted U-shaped relationship between customer involvement and product innovation performance: moderate engagement maximises returns, while over-involvement can dilute focus. Community affiliation strengthens the positive effect at low to moderate involvement levels but weakens it when participation is excessive. Knowledge contribution within the community mediates the overall innovation outcome. In B2B contexts, research demonstrates that customer involvement drives new product performance up to an optimal point, after which benefits wane.
