Education assessment and evaluation encompass a spectrum of systematic practices designed to measure, analyse and enhance student learning, programme effectiveness and institutional quality. At the classroom level, formative assessment provides ongoing feedback to guide teaching and promote self-regulated learning, while summative assessment certifies achievement against defined standards. Programme-level evaluation employs both qualitative and quantitative methods—surveys, focus groups, performance data and accreditation reviews—to ensure curricula align with intended learning outcomes and graduate attributes. Institutional quality assurance frameworks integrate internal self-evaluation and peer review with external accreditation and benchmarking to foster continuous improvement. Emerging trends include competency-based models that emphasise mastery rather than seat time, adaptive assessments tailored to individual learning paths, and the use of digital dashboards to monitor performance indicators in real time. Across contexts, the core challenge is to balance accountability and comparability with support for diverse learners and innovation in teaching. Effective assessment strategies not only document outcomes but also drive pedagogical refinement, inform resource allocation and reinforce a culture of evidence-based decision-making in education.

Research from Nature Portfolio

A multinational study analysed a collaborative master’s programme in education, surveying over 300 trainee teachers and conducting in-depth interviews. Researchers evaluated organisational efficiency, teaching quality and learner satisfaction, highlighting the strengths of blended learning models and recommending ongoing institutional self-evaluation to adapt curricula to local contexts. Key proposals included refining face-to-face components, strengthening internal regulation and embedding reflective mechanisms to sustain continuous improvement. A qualitative ethnographic investigation at a Saudi higher education institution examined the role of subcultures—particularly a “quality subgroup”—in advancing academic accreditation criteria. The study revealed how this subgroup positively influences adoption of quality standards, while other subcultures impede progress, and discussed implications for organisational culture, leadership and policy development in rapidly evolving higher education environments.

Technical terms
