In contrast, mainstream outlets are more likely to present the science without invoking scepticism, though they too sometimes foreground concerns about short-term sacrifices. In a complementary laboratory study, individual reactions to resource-depletion warnings were examined in a controlled dilemma task. Four distinct behavioural profiles emerged, with participants who experienced guilt in response to warnings demonstrating greater shifts towards sustainable choices. Those who did not register guilt showed little or even counterproductive responses. The findings underscore guilt’s potential as a driver of more responsible consumption in warning-based communications.
