Summary
The history and philosophy of the humanities examine how disciplines concerned with human culture, thought and expression have evolved and how they articulate their own methods, aims and significance. Beginning with the classical trivium and quadrivium, the humanities have progressively diversified into fields such as literature, history, philosophy, languages, religious studies and the arts. Philosophical reflection on the humanities addresses questions of interpretation, value, normativity and epistemic authority, emphasising the role of critical reflection, contextual understanding and creative reasoning. Institutional histories trace the rise of the modern research university, the impact of nation‐state patronage, and shifting conceptions of scholarly autonomy.
