Summary

The study of the built environment spans the emergence of early cities through the medieval commune, the idealised Renaissance and Baroque city, the regimented rationalism of modernist planning and the pluralist debates of postmodernism. Recent decades have seen the synthesis of positivist methods—quantitative mapping, network analysis—and hermeneutic perspectives—phenomenology, critical regionalism—to address global challenges in water management, heritage conservation, resilience and equitable urban development.
