Infant and Child Health

Infant and child health encompasses the full spectrum of physical, nutritional, developmental and preventive care from the prenatal period through adolescence. In the neonatal and early-life phases, survival hinges on timely interventions such as antenatal corticosteroid therapy for lung maturation, skilled birth attendance and newborn resuscitation, alongside promotion of exclusive breastfeeding and kangaroo mother care to support thermal regulation, immunity and growth. As children grow, key priorities shift to immunisation against vaccine-preventable diseases, community-based case management for pneumonia and diarrhoeal illnesses, and early detection and treatment of acute and chronic conditions. Nutritional status—from undernutrition and stunting to emerging overweight and obesity—shapes long-term cognitive outcomes and adult disease risk in line with the developmental origins of health and disease. Safe-sleep practices, injury prevention and neurodevelopmental surveillance further underpin healthy trajectories. Advances in digital health, artificial intelligence and imaging are expanding diagnostic and monitoring capabilities, while research on responsive feeding and caregiver–child interactions informs strategies to optimise dietary intake and weight gain. Global challenges including inequity, climate change, conflict and emerging infections underscore the need for resilient, multisectoral health systems that deliver equitable, evidence-based care to every child.

A deep learning–based segmentation pipeline has been validated for accurate tissue classification across paediatric and adult brain MRI scans, demonstrating improved reproducibility of volumetric measures and reduced inter-scanner variability. This unified framework supports longitudinal tracking of structural development and early detection of neurodevelopmental disorders. A proof-of-concept study employed Bayesian network models to assist the categorisation of sudden unexpected infant death, integrating forensic risk factors to reproduce expert diagnoses and to predict elevated risk linked to passive smoke exposure and co-sleeping. A longitudinal German cohort study assessed implementation of safe-sleep recommendations in the first year of life, finding high rates of room-sharing but persistent deviations from supine sleeping and widespread bed-sharing, thus identifying priority areas for parental education and policy reinforcement.

Technical terms

Bayesian network: A graphical model that encodes probabilistic relationships among variables, enabling diagnostic support by estimating conditional probabilities of outcomes.

Automated segmentation: The process of using machine learning algorithms to delineate and classify anatomical regions—such as brain tissues—in medical imaging without manual intervention.

Supine position: Placing an infant to sleep on their back, which reduces the risk of airway obstruction and sudden unexpected infant death.

Responsive feeding: A feeding approach in which caregivers recognise and respond promptly and appropriately to an infant’s hunger and fullness signals to support self-regulated eating and healthy growth.

Hunger cue: A behavioural or physiological sign—such as rooting, hand-to-mouth movements or increased alertness—that indicates an infant’s readiness to feed.
