Summary
Access to oral health care remains uneven across societies, with low-income groups, ethnic minorities, rural communities, older adults and people with chronic illnesses disproportionately affected. Financial constraints, lack of insurance coverage, limited availability of local dental providers and transportation barriers often deter routine preventive visits, leading to higher rates of untreated decay, periodontal disease and tooth loss. Cultural and linguistic obstacles, as well as anxiety or past negative experiences, further discourage attendance. These inequities translate into pain, impaired nutrition, diminished social participation and broader systemic health risks. Recent efforts have sought to integrate dental screening into primary care, deploy mobile clinics and extend public insurance schemes, but significant gaps persist. A comprehensive approach that addresses social determinants, streamlines service delivery and fosters community engagement is essential to narrow disparities and improve outcomes for the most vulnerable.
