A Brazilian analysis using the Oaxaca–Blinder decomposition method reveals that 43 per cent of the performance gap between white and Black students in national secondary examinations remains unexplained by observable socio-demographic characteristics. The findings further indicate that Black learners exhibit a lower responsiveness to improvements in educational inputs, underscoring the need for targeted interventions that address both material and psychosocial dimensions of schooling.

An investigation into the interplay of race and parental occupation within public school populations has demonstrated that socioeconomic status mediates much of the observed variance in academic achievement. Although race itself is a social construct, the study finds that students from marginalised racial backgrounds often contend with occupational inequities in their households, which in turn influence their educational trajectories.
